Sweden (3-2) will get the matchup they apparently wanted when they play surprising Switzerland (2-1-2) on Wednesday.
The Swedes looked as good as gold in Salt Lake City four years ago, but were stunned in the quarters by Belarus.
Coach Bengt Gustafsson evidently didn't think lightning could strike twice, telling Swedish TV on Monday that they would prefer to play Switzerland than Canada or the Czech Republic, with the prospect affecting their approach for the final preliminary game against Slovakia.
"We are discussing extensively within our group what is good and what is not good. It is a tricky situation and we are facing difficult pre-conditions how to deal with this situation," Gustafsson said. "Shall we try to select our opponent or shall we do what it takes to win and then take the opponent that comes our way?"
Sweden didn't bolster its case by losing a 3-0 shutout to the Slovaks on Tuesday.
"We try to win every game we play," captain Mats Sundin told CBC Sports. "We didn't have a very good game obviously. If we want to move on and have a chance at the medals and playing in the gold medal game, we have to play a lot better."
Switzerland's coach Ralph Krueger, obviously, wasn't thrilled with the talk that his team was being viewed as a convenient stepping stone.
"Well, what I heard is definitely not showing respect for us, and it makes it easy on a coach when you have words like that coming at you from the other side," Krueger said. "Our team has a lot of pride and they come to the Olympic Games to have respect and we didn't get it on that comment, but we'll concentrate on ourselves and let the other teams make their own mistakes."
Die Schweden haben gestern schlapp gespielt damit se die Schweizer kriegen und nicht die Kanadier.
Also wischt denen eins aus bitte
